I was sitting by myself the other night, reminiscing about when my first was just born. My husband agreed to leave his job to care for her because daycare was expensive, the only one that we felt comfortable with was out of our price range, and my job offered better insurance. My husband, at the time, worked in another city and we shared a car. Him being home would save us money on gas. My mother also agreed to come on Mondays and stay overnight to give him a break. I, at the time, made $35,000 before taxes and we both had those oh so wonderful student loans. Needless to say, we had to learn to cut corners with a new baby. So we did, and thus began my life creating ways to care for our family inexpensively.
One way to do this was by making my own baby wipes. Yep, you read that right. Knowing the sensitive skin that my family has, I’m even more grateful that I did. Doing so saved us money and I didn’t have to deal with rashes on my child from store bought wipes.
Baby Wipes- homemade
Ingredients
- Thick paper towels
- 1.5-2 cups of boiled water
- A box or previous baby wipe box
- Baby oil and/or baby bath of your choice
- Essential oil for skin (optional)
Directions
- Cut roll of paper towels in half, horizontally.
- Next, pull the cardboard roll out of each (it should come out without the paper towels unraveling. Set towels to the side.
- In the box, pour about 1.5 cups of warm water into the box. Add a teaspoon of baby oil (and 1/2 tsp essential oil-optional) to the water. Stir it once.
- Place the paper towel roll in the box of water and roll is around until every inch is coated.
- Close the top of the box and pull a sheet of paper towel when needed.
Doing this saved us much money than buying a cheaper brand of wipes (hey, it’s what we could have afforded at the time). This worked so well, that I used the same method on my second child two years after. Both kids were happy, and my family saved money.
